Negotiating for Employee Severance Packages
It is possible for laid off employees to try to negotiate their severance packages, although it is advisable to obtain the help of professionals when doing this, as the former employee may unknowingly waive chances at getting any type of severance at all. It is always better to have a professional in the corner to give good advice and to help with all of the negotiations. Typical severance packages include not only the remaining pay for the time worked, but pay based on years of service as well. For example, an employee who served ten years with the company might receive an extra twenty weeks of pay if the severance policy states that the employee receives two weeks extra pay for every year of service. Employees should also check to see if the package includes any additional time for benefits, such as medical or dental.
